Basics of Window Tinting
Window tints are an efficient way to reduce energy costs. They cut costs by inhibiting the need for AC in cars and houses. Window tints are simply a layer of film glued to the inner or outer part of the window, making it harder for sunlight to pass through. Less sunlight creates less heat, and therefore the less need for AC. This is the main benefit of window tints, and with the popularity of the “Go Green” campaign tints are becoming more and more popular.
Window tints are sold in custom kits or in bulk (rolls). The custom kits can be found online or just about any auto store. Auto Zone or NAPA have entire sections devoted to tints. Encouraging self installation, these kits come with detailed instructions and diagrams. Some stores may even offer free installation services with the purchase of a tint kit.
When performing a self-installation on your car, the first step is to measure the length and width of the windows that you are tinting. Pay special attention to the width because it is relative to what size film to buy. If you come up short on the width you will have overlying window tint; this can look ugly and unprofessional. You don’t want your window to look amature. It’s easier to do it right the first time. It’s better to play it safe and measure all dimensions of the windows to prevent and need for overlapping and splicing.
As far as bulk window tinting goes, the film can be purchased in larger quantities, such as rolls. Rolls are better suited for residential and commercial use. Again, if you are performing a self-installation, make sure you take time to measure and read the directions. Just as it would be on a car, the overlapping look is unattractive. A botched self install can also result in air bubbles forming. Once the adhesive is stuck to the window, it is nearly impossible to remove the air bubble. The best thing to do is either take your time and read the instructions, or have a professional install the tint for you.
